WHO concerned over critical health situation in Al-Hol camp, Al-Hasakeh

World Health Organization

01 Feb. 2019, Damascus, Syria – The World Health Organization is extremely concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Al-Hol camp in Al-Hasakeh governorate, and calls on all parties to the conflict to provide unhindered humanitarian access to people in need of life-saving aid.

Over the last 2 months, approximately 23 000 people, mainly women and children fleeing hostilities in rural areas of neighbouring Deir-ez-Zor, have arrived in the camp. Many of them have walked or travelled in open trucks for several days and nights in the bitterly cold winter weather. Their journeys have been delayed en route by lengthy security screening procedures in an exposed field, and their ordeal has not ended on arrival to the camp. Thousands of new arrivals have been forced to spend several nights in the camp’s open-air reception and screening areas, without tents, blankets or heating. At least 29 children and newborns are reported to have died over the past 8 weeks, mainly from hypothermia, while travelling to the camp or shortly after arrival.

The situation in the camp is now critical. Its population has tripled in size (from 10 000 to almost 33 000 people) in less than 2 months. The authorities are overwhelmed and struggling to cope with the sheer numbers of people. Many new arrivals are malnourished and exhausted following years of deprivation living under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The camp is unheated and there are shortages of health care services, tents, latrines and sanitation facilities. Humanitarian access to the camp and surrounding roads is hampered by bureaucratic obstacles and security constraints.

Since the beginning of January, WHO has delivered over 35 000 treatment courses to support the work of 2 mobile clinics donated by WHO, as well as 4 mobile health teams currently operating in the camp. WHO-supported teams are working round the clock to screen new arrivals and refer them to hospitals when required. Severely malnourished children are being referred to a WHO-supported hospital in Al-Hasakeh.

WHO is also supporting the deployment of additional vaccination teams, setting up disease surveillance, and training camp volunteers on psychological first aid and basic counselling. Follow-up care is being arranged for all infants and health care workers are being trained on neonatal resuscitation and newborn care at home. The health sector has urged that ambulances and medical staff be placed on standby along the route to the camp and that buses be deployed to transport families, especially those with very young children.

”The situation in Al-Hol camp is heartbreaking. Children are dying from hypothermia as their families flee to safety. We are scaling up our efforts in Al Hol, but we need faster approvals to allow us deliver supplies, and we need guaranteed access to both the camp and the roads leading to it. We call on all parties to give us unhindered access so that we can reach these people and give them the help they desperately need,” said Elizabeth Hoff, WHO Representative in Syria.

Samsung doesn’t see India with one lens or one portfolio: Asim Warsi Vice President, Samsung

Samsung logo

New Delhi, Jan 14 . Unlike most Chinese smartphone manufacturers who are "one portfolio" players, South Korean giant Samsung does not see India with one lens and one portfolio and believes in serving all consumers across price points, stresses Asim Warsi, Global Vice President, Samsung India.

By Nishant Arora

Gearing up to launch two smartphones -- M10 for around Rs 9,500 and M20 for nearly Rs 15,000 -- with industry-first features this month, Warsi said the company is deeply committed to the whole smartphone ecosystem and not just one price segment.

"We are here to serve all consumers -- from flagship premium and luxury to mid-range, affordable and popular smartphone segments. Being a full-range player, we have a full deployment and infrastructure in place in the country," Warsi told IANS in an interview.

"We have been developing products for India via our robust R&D and product design teams based here. We have made deep investments into the country. We do not see India from one lens or one portfolio, unlike others."

The first-ever 'M' series smartphones with features like Infinity V display and massive battery power are being manufactured for the millennials at Samsung's facility in Noida -- the world's largest mobile phone factory.

"India is the first market for the global launch of 'M' series. It will go to other markets later. The 'M' portfolio which will be made available through online channel is singlemindedly designed and intended for millennials," informed Warsi.

Industry experts believe that Samsung, which is still the most vertical integrated player in the Indian market, has set its eyes firmly on dethroning Xiaomi's highly successful 'Redmi' series in the affordable and mid-price range segment.

"Samsung has access to latest display, camera, memory and connectivity technologies from hardware perspective. Further, it can enjoy global scale for the same 'M' models more than Xiaomi," Neil Shah, Partner and Research Director at Counterpoint Research told IANS.

According to Warsi, collective knowledge, understanding on tech and R&D and consumer behaviour -- the company has put all these together in conceiving the 'M' series.

"Nearly third of India's population are millennials. Studies show that more than half the shoppers online are millennials. The 'M' series through the online channel is designed for them."

The young consumers are on top of the chain when it comes to using the hardware and software and over-the-top (OTT) applications on their devices.

"They are very evolved, intelligent consumers and research drives them to best value devices and the 'M' series is just that -- in terms of battery, speed, display and visual richness. We have changed the bar with 'M' series in the popular price segments in the country," noted Warsi.

Galaxy M20 will house a massive 5,000mAh battery -- the first-ever on any Samsung smartphone -- a big plus for phone users in the country who treat battery life as one of their key requirements. The M10 will house a 3,500mAh battery.

"You will see evocative display, massive battery with power management solutions, memory management solutions, fast charging technology -- all in 'M' devices.

"In one word, these are powerful devices, made for India keeping the local requirements in mind," Warsi added.

According to him, the Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 price segment is very large and high-growing segment.

"In fact, all price segments are growing but most important is what millennials are buying into. The 'M' series is going to give them what they are currently doing with their devices, including shopping.

"Our pursuit of the consumer is clear: wherever is the demand, we will be there," said Warsi.

Jaitley indirectly accepts allegations of congress on Rafale, says – Gandhi family understands only money, not national security

Jaitley indirectly accepts allegations of congress on Rafale, says - Gandhi family understands only money, not national security

New Delhi, Jan 02. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday launched a no-holds-barred attack on Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his family and said he understood only the arithmetic of money and not issues related to national security.

Intervening in a debate on the controversial Rafale fighter jet deal in the Lok Sabha, he said it was a tragedy that the nation's "grand old party is today headed by a gentleman who doesn't even understand what a combat aircraft is".

Jaitley said the Congress and Gandhi were resorting to the simple argument of "Rs 500 (crore) versus Rs 1,600 (crore)" -- an apparent reference to the difference in the price of aircraft in contracts signed by the UPA government and the current government.

"There is a reason for that. Some people and families in India only understand the arithmetic of money... They don't understand national security but only 'paisa'," he said.

Without naming the Gandhi family, he asked why was it that one family's name came up in the Bofor's case, the National Herald case and the AugustaWestland case.

"Had it been one case, I would have given them the benefit of doubt. But three is a bit too much."

Referring to a dialogue in the famous James Bond movies, the Finance Minister said: "If it happens once, it's happenstance; if it happens twice, it's a coincidence; but if it happens thrice, then it's a conspiracy.

"And today conspirators who have played with India's national security have the audacity to raise questions on a defence deal."

Dismissing Rahul Gandhi's allegations of irregularities in the Rafale deal, Jaitley said he "took unprecedented liberties with truth" while making those charges.

"Some people have a natural dislike for truth. From first to last -- every word spoken (by Gandhi) in the last few months has been utterly false.

"It is a big tragedy for the country's most grand old party which was once led by remarkable leaders that it is today being led by a gentleman who doesn't even have the basic understanding of what a combat aircraft is."

Congress governments in MP, Rajasthan to withdraw cases against Dalits filed by previous BJP government

Congress governments in MP, Rajasthan to withdraw cases against Dalits filed by previous BJP government

Bhopal/Jaipur, Jan 01. Heeding to BSP chief Mayawati's ultimatum, the Congress governments in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on Tuesday said they will withdraw cases filed against Dalits during the 'Bharat Bandh' last year that witnessed largescale violence.

The decisions were announced by the two governments a day after Mayawati threatened to take back the BSP's support to them if they did not withdraw the cases filed against the Dalits during the 'Bharat Bandh' called by Dalit groups.

The Madhya Pradesh government will withdraw all the "political cases" filed by the previous BJP government against workers of political parties and Dalit activists, Law Minister P.C. Sharma said.

"We (Congress) have been fighting (against the BJP government). Irrespective of any party, those who have been fighting the BJP government which had sent people to jail... those political cases will be withdrawn," he said.

Last week, Sharma had indicated that the government was drafting a proposal to withdraw "politically motivated" cases against political and trade union leaders filed during the BJP's rule during the last 15 years.

In Jaipur, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said his government will revoke cases registered against Dalits during the Bharat Bandh of April 2 last year after reviewing them.

Speaking to the media at the Congress office, Gehlot said:

"Our government will review all such cases to ensure that innocents are released."

He said that Mayawati's demand was valid. The previous government had framed cases against many people "and hence our government will review all such cases".

"In fact, I am thankful to Mayawati for giving support to our party. She herself took the initiative to extend support to the Congress and hence I am thankful to her."

The BSP has two members in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly in which the Congress has 114 MLAs and is two short of the majority mark.

The Samajwadi Party has one MLA and has also extended support to the government. There are four independents.

In the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, the Congress has 99 members and its pre-poll ally Rashtriya Lok Dal has one MLA. There are six BSP MLAs and 13 independents.

The Congress had supported the protest in April 2018 against the changes to the SC/ST Act brought in by the Supreme Court which were later nullified by a legislation passed in Parliament.

Achchhe din :  UP to levy ‘cow welfare cess’

Achchhe din :  UP to levy 'cow welfare cess'

Lucknow, Jan 01. The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday cleared a proposal to levy a 2 per cent 'cow welfare cess' on the excise department, an official said.

Although the love of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for cows has been known since he took charge of the state in March 2017, this decision has outmatched everything else in the past.

At a cabinet meeting presided by him on Tuesday, a proposal was ratified to open cowsheds in all districts, gram panchayats, municipalities, municipal corporations and other local bodies.

An official said that temporary cow sheds (gaushalas) will be opened in all the village, regional, district panchayats, municipalities, nagar panchayats and municipal corporations.

Through MNREGA, these cowsheds will be constructed. The government has already sanctioned Rs 100 crore to the local bodies.

In every district, both urban and rural areas, a cowshed of minimum 1,000 stray animals will be built and for this the excise department will levy a cess of 2 per cent. This will be called 'cow welfare cess'.

The cabinet okayed a proposal to provide financial assistance to police personnel and firemen who are maimed during duty, an official said.

Personnel handicapped to an extent of 70-79 per cent will be given Rs 15 lakh and those handicapped between 50-69 per cent will draw Rs 10 lakh. The personnel getting 80-100 per cent disability during duty will be given Rs 20 lakh.

In case of death, the widow are entitled to get Rs 40 lakh as per existing rules.

The cabinet also cleared a proposal to change the vigilance department sections in 10 sectors - Lucknow, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra, Bareilly and Meerut into police stations.

Rabada, who split the top ranking with England's seasoned fast bowler James Anderson during the year, is just six points ahead of his adversary.

Rabada, who became the youngest to take top position among bowlers during the year and held the spot for 178 days during the year, grabbed six wickets in the opening match at Centurion that South Africa won by six wickets to finish with 52 wickets in 10 Tests in 2018.

Homecoming for PV Sindhu; Saina Nehwal to don the North East outfit for 4th season of Vodafone Premie Badminton League

Taapsee Pannu speaks about her excitement following her new association with PBL

Homecoming for PV Sindhu; Saina Nehwal to don the North East outfit for 4th season of Vodafone Premie Badminton League

* Pune 7 Aces goes all out to rope in world champion Carolina Marin

* Highest paid non-Icon Player Tommy Sugiarto; highest paid Indian non-Icon Player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy

New Delhi October 8: World Champion Carolina Marin and PV Sindhu were expectedly the most sought after Icon Players as the two 2018 world championship finallists were picked by Pune 7 Aces and defending champions Hyderabad Hunters respectively in the Players' Auction for the fourth edition of the Vodafone Premier Badminton League (PBL) here on Monday.

The fourth season of PBL, organised by Sportzlive under the aegis of Badminton Association of India, will kick off in Mumbai from December 22, 2018.

With no retention or Right to Match (RTM) card at disposal, the Players' Auction was always going to be a keen contest for teams to get the combination right while looking for that one Icon Player who can inspire them to bigger glory.

Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto became the highest paid non-Icon Player with the Dalmia Cement Group owned Delhi Dashers splurging INR 70 lakh for his services. The Delhi outfit won a tense battle with two other teams to acquire the World No 11, paying more than double his base price (INR 40 lakh above his base price.)

Among the Indians, rising doubles star Satwiksairaj Rankireddy was the top draw and Padmanabh Sports Pvt Ltd owned Ahmedabad Smash Masters outbid the Hyderabad Hunters to secure the youngster for INR 52 lakh, a massive jump from his base price of INR 15 lakh.

Given the strong pool of players in the auction, it was interesting to see the strategies the teams implemented to build their squad as three of these players could be retained for the next two seasons as well.

Marin and Sindhu were the obvious choice for almost all the teams. At least four teams raised the prize purse to INR 80 lakh, the maximum limit a team can bid for a player, before the players got assigned to the teams by a draw of lots.

The Spaniard, who played a major role in helping Hyderabad Hunters win the title last year, would now shift base to Pune. The new outfit were clearly gunning for the three-time world champion and were understandably delighted when the announcer pulled out a chit of their name in a draw of lot.

"I am very excited to be part of Pune team. Hyderabad has been like a second home for me. But now I am excited to be part the Pune team and explore this part of India," said Marin after learning about the bid.

Speaking post the player auctions an upbeat Taapsee Pannu, owner of Pune 7 Aces said, "We had a set game-plan and I am really ecstatic to be able to rope in some of the big names in the auction pool today. It has been a perfect implementation of the homework we had done. With a champion in Marin, experienced Mathias Boe in the doubles category and young Lakshya Sen, am really optimistic how balanced the team has shaped up. Can’t wait for the season to start!”

While the Hunters lost their star performer from last year, they would be delighted to welcome home Rio Olympics silver medallist Sindhu. The 23-year-old, who was playing for Chennai Smashers for the last two seasons, will be playing for the home city for the first time and couldn't hide her excitement.

Two times CWG gold winner and India’s badminton queen Saina Nehwal will be seen plying her trade for the North-Eastern Warriors in the upcoming edition.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to get associated with the North Eastern Warriors. The fans over here are extremely passionate and I will try and give my best for them. I always had a special admiration for the north-east and with this alliance I wish to promote badminton in this region, so that we have more people inspired to take up the sport," said the 2012 Olympic Medallist

Among the other Icon Players, former world champion Viktor Axelsen will represent Ahmedabad Smash Masters, Kidambi Srikanth would play for Bengaluru Raptors, HS Prannoy will turn up for Delhi Dashers.

Chennai Smashers, who will have Korean Sung ji Hyun as their icon player, managed to retain the services of English mixed doubles combination of Chris and Gabby Adcock, paying them INR 54 lakh and INR 36 lakh respectively.

Korea's mixed doubles specialist Eom Hye Won also got a Rs 30 lakh jump from her base price of Rs 7 lakh as the Hyderabad Hunters secured her to build a strong doubles unit.

But it was Delhi Dashers who broke the bank to get Sugiarto in the squad after they had already paid Rs 80 lakh for Prannoy. However, their strategy clearly was to invest in men's singles and they made the most of it.

"We are thrilled to announce our team Delhi Dashers and the choicest players for this season of Premier Badminton League 2018. Led by Indian icon H S Prannoy and Indonesian champion Tommy Sugiarto, we are confident that the team will perform exceptionally well and emerge victorious this season. We have the right mix of power and punch when it comes to our new players in this edition. It is the vision of the company to make sports a way of life for everyone in the country and Badminton is just the right sport to achieve this. We are privileged and extremely excited for the league to begin," said Mahendra Singhi, Group CEO, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd, the company which owns the team.

Two teams -- Awadhe Warriors and Mumbai Rockets -- exhausted their entire purse of INR 2.6 crore while Pune 7 Aces despite putting up a challenging line up managed to save INR14 lakhs and North Eastern Warriors despite building a formidable squad around Nehwal still saved INR 8 lakhs.

Secularism is soul of democracy, J&K is spring of secularism with flowers of all colours

Prof. Bhim Singh Jammu-Kashmir National Panthers Party जम्मू-कश्मीर नेशनल पैंथर्स पार्टी के मुख्य संरक्षक प्रो.भीमसिंह

Secularism is soul of democracy, J&K is spring of secularism with flowers of all colours

Prof.Bhim Singh, Chief Patron of National Panthers Party called on people of J&K irrespective of their political and religious affiliation to stand together, sail together so that the people of entire State of J&K get an opportunity to grow together so that peace is restored in J&K and the people of the entire country get an opportunity to grow and develop together ensuring healthy development for the coming generation. He reminded the people of the entire country to study the history of the people of J&K, particularly the people of Kashmir Valley who stood in secular faith with the Union of India at the time of partition of India in 1947. He reminded the new generation not to forget the secular history of the people of Kashmir Valley who faced the invading raiders from across the border in the Valley of Kashmir in 1947. This is unfortunate, he said that some elements from outside have been trying to mislead the people thus disturbing the present secular atmosphere in the land of peace.

History of treaty of Amritsar signed in 1846

Prof.Bhim Singh appealed the younger generation in Kashmir Valley as well as in Jammu Pradesh to read the past history of J&K before the Treaty of Amritsar signed in 1846 and its history developed under the Dogra rulers after 1846 when Maharaja Gulab Singh took over J&K as its Maharaja. It was Maharaja Gulab Singh himself with Dogra soldiers who cleaned the premises of Jama Masjid, Kashmir and help the local Muslim population to have comfortable prayer. He reminded the generation that J&K joined Union of India in 1947 when Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession on 26th October, 1947. These were the Kashmiri Muslims who resisted the invading raiders some of them are recorded in the history. The Muslims of Kashmir have emerged as high ranking secularists in the history of India written after 1947. The Kashmiri Muslims have made enormous sacrifices in defense of secular character of Kashmir which is recorded in the history of India. The political compulsions and propaganda has misrepresented the real face of Kashmir and the Kashmiries cannot be treated as separatists or communal.

Secularism is soul of democracy

Prof.Bhim Singh thanked the younger elements, hailing from Udhampur and Ramnagar some of whom have conveyed their opinion through social media. I hope that younger generation from all over the state should read and understand what I have been saying and with what mission. When we created Panthers Party in 1982 the mission was clear and is still alive in my mind that secularism is soul of democracy and essential for the growth of the state. No state can be nourished in the name of any particular religion or community. Tolerance has to be faith so that all of us shall work together, grow together without any selfish or personal motive or desire. Panthers Party is a mission which stands for reorganization of the entire State of J&K with secular faith and justice to all.

Prof.Bhim Singh appealed to all Panthers Party volunteers, its voters and even its critics to think of the entire nation, entire people which include all religions, all castes, all regions and that humanity is the greatest religion and all the citizens of India from Kanyakumari to Kashmir belong to human race. We should think hundred times before we speak or write a word on the conduct of human race.

CONSCIENCE KEEPER OF PAKISTAN SABEEN MAHMUD ASSASSINATED IN KARACHI  There will be many more SABEEN MAHMUDS to carry forward the fight against fascism The killing by the assassins at Karachi of a democrat, liberal and secular activist Sabeen Mahmud, a dear friend, is a great loss to the fraternity which is fighting state terrorism, totalitarianism and religious bigotry in the Indian sub-continent. Sabeen, a prominent Pakistani social and human rights activist was shot while she was returning home with her mother after hosting an event on Balochistan’s "disappeared people". Sabeen, 40, was the director of T2F [The Second Floor], a café and arts space that has been a mainstay of Karachi’s activists since it opened its doors in 2007. She was one of the country’s most outspoken human rights advocates. According to reports she was shot four times at close range, with bullets going through her shoulder, chest and abdomen. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the National Medical Centre hospital in Karachi. Her mother was also shot twice and is fighting for her life. abeen was an outspoken critic of the “disappearance” of thousands of innocent Balochis for resisting the inhuman policies of the Pakistan government towards the Balochis. Sabeen had been present at the opening of a discussion called "Unsilencing Balochistan," hosted at T2F, where prominent Baloch rights activists Mama Qadeer, Farzana Majeed and Muhammad Ali Talpur had been speaking. Qadeer and Majeed have long championed the cause of Balochistan’s "disappeared," a term used to describe people who have been abducted in Balochistan, with their bodies often found years later. The Voice of Baloch Missing Persons organisation, which both activists belong to, says that more than 2,825 people have "disappeared" in this way since 2005. Sabeen was a moving spirit behind the campaign to unearth the truth behind these disappearances. It is to be noted that “disappearances” or kidnappings by the state intelligence agencies is not confined to Pakistan only. In India’s Jammu and Kashmir more than 9000 young Kashmiris are believed to have been kidnapped by the state agencies in last three decades. They remain untraced even today. In Indian Punjab, thousands “disappeared” when police/military campaign was launched to cleanse Punjab of Sikh militancy. A noted crusader to find out the truth behind these disappearances, lawyer Jaswant Singh Khalra too disappeared on September 6, 1995 never to be found again. Sabeen Mahmud was a sane voice against militarization in Pakistan and state terrorism. She was a brave young activist who dared to challenge the evil forces and did not care for her safety. She used to say that what would be the use of surviving when justice, liberty and democracy cease to exist. Those who hired killers believe that by physically liquidating individuals like Sabeen they can win. They can kill an individual but cannot kill ideas. There will be many more Sabeens to carry forward the fight against fascism. Shamsul Islam [embed]https://youtu.be/YRX8Yn3C74g[/embed]

To The Hon'ble Chief Election Commissioner, New Delhi Dear Shri Sampath I went this morning [April 10] before 8 am and cast my vote at the Cambridge School, New Friends Colony, New Delhi-110025, falling in the East Delhi Parliamentary Constituency.. A police officer, Narinder Kumar, entered the Polling Booth No 13 and wanted to know from the Polling Officers how many votes had been cast so far. I said this was no joking matter. He apologised and disappeared.Another police officer, Kanhaiya Lal,A.S.I., then said that Narinder Kumar had only been talking to a staffer and not to a voter.
