New Delhi. The Peoples' Rights Organisation, a Human Rights Body, strongly condemns the physical attack on Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, a known CPI (M) leader, former AG, Tripura State and also former Mayor of Kolkata, April 1st, at Goghat in Hooghly district by persons identified to belong to the ruling Trinamool Congress. He had gone to enquire and meet protesting villagers about a land acquisition for a railway project.
Dr. Aurobindo Ghose, General Secretary, Peoples' Rights Organisation, A Human Rights Body said,
“According to a NDTV report , Bikash Bhattacharyya was dragged out of his car and slapped and kicked. This is a very serious attack on her political opponents by Mamata Banerjee, particularly in view of the fact that she came to power in West Bengal on the issue of illegal land acquisition in Singur and Nandigram. The silence of the West Bengal CM on this issue is indeed ominous.
No words suffice to condemn this blatant and brazen attack on human rights. We demand an independent probe into the incident and expeditious booking and arrest of the culprits.”
