Pune : The Lal Ded National Award instituted by Sarhad, Pune in the name of 14th century Kashmiri Shaivite Saint-Poetess Lalleshwari is being conferred upon 91 years old renowned novelist, humanist and Sahitya Akademi winner Nayantara Sahgal. The award ceremony will take place at the Constitution Club, New Delhi on 6th September, 2018. The award shall be given at the hands of former Chief Minister of J&K Dr. Farooq Abdhulla and the function shall be presided over by former RAW Chief A. S. Dulat. Sanjay Nahar, founder president of Sarhad informed here today.
Lalleshwari was born 650 years ago in a Kashmiri Pandit family. Her verses are sung in Kashmiri households even today. She was and is equally popular among the Kashmiri Hindus and Muslims.
Nayantara Sahgal, born in a family of Sanskrit scholars like Sitaram and Shankar Pandurang Pandit on the father’s side, and the Nehru family on the mother’s side, is the daughter of Sanskrit scholar Ranjit Pandit and Vijaya Laxmi Pandit. She has been chosen for this award for her independent and courageous stance on various issues.
The award consists of Rs. 1 Lakh cash, memento and a citation. Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai is the Chief Guest of the function. A press release by Sarhad dated 4th September, 2018 informs this.
