STATEMENT OF CONDEMNATION AND APPEAL FOR INQUIRY INTO DEATH OF PAKISTANI PRISONER IN JAMMU JAIL
We, at Aaghaz e Dosti, an initiative for Indo-Pak Friendship, express our concern over the recent death of a Pakistani prisoner in Jammu jail of India.
Shaukat Ali, who hailed from Pind Sail Jathan in Sialkot, had crossed the international border in 2008 and was arrested until he was deported in 2010. He was re-arrested in 2011 from Jammu for re-entering the border.
On 22nd February, Ali was found hanging from the iron window of a barrack toilet in Amphalla jail. The Indian officials report it to be a suicide case. However, Pakistan’s foreign spokesperson has claimed it to be a reaction of the torture at the hands of Indian authorities.
It is no surprise that such incidents on both sides of the border happen quite frequently. We also know that the extremist factions on either sides of the border then exploit the innocent civilians through inflammatory statements designed to create further violence, chaos and instability. These incidents pose a setback to the peace process.
India and Pakistan both countries must understand that there are hundreds of prisoners who are languishing in jails of either side. For these prisoners, things are not easy, instred they face lot of problems, specially in terms of security, that can be compromised or can be broken at any time in the name of country and politics. Recent example is the death of Sarabjit in Pakistan and Sanaullah in India.
We therefore call upon all responsible institutions including the police and the judiciary to investigate into the matter. We also appal to hand over the body of the prisoner to Pakistani authorities. Today, it has been reported that the Indian Government has released 20 Pakistani prisoners who had completed their sentence. We welcome this move as a move for humanity. We hope that this may continue that both the Governments to look into the condition of the prisoners in their respective jails and to release all such prisoners, on humanitarian grounds, who have completed their sentences.
An intiative for Indo-Pak friendship
