To March 25, 2014
The Central Election Commission
Memorandum from Women’s Organisations
Respected Members of the Central Election Commission,
On behalf of women’s organisations’ we would like to draw your attention to a recent statement made by a candidate Deepak Adhikari alias Dev standing on the TMC ticket from Ghatal,W. Midnapore, Bengal. When asked how he felt about being a candidate he replied ‘Arre Yaar it is like getting raped. Either shout or lie back and enjoy it.”
Words are inadequate to describe the anger that such a statement has invoked among women across the country. It is atrocious, insulting to all women and trivializes the heinous crime of rape. It has deeply injured the sentiments of women.
The question arises has the Election Commission sent a notice to the individual concerned? Surely action against such atrocious statements should come within the jurisdiction of the Election Commission. The election code for the conduct of political parties and candidates must include a specific clause that debars such statements.
It should be remembered that women constitute half of the electorate in India. Statements like these discourage women from coming into the public domain and even from exercising their right to vote.
It is essential for the EC to intervene and issue notice to the person concerned. It is also essential to issue a public warning to all political parties and candidates to desist from making sexist and misogynist statements and that any such statement will constitute a violation of the code of conduct.
