Remembering Afzal Guru

Meeting “Martyrs, Resistance and Kashmir’s Road to Freedom- Remembering Shaheed Afzal Guru one year after his martyrdom”, held at Plenary Auditorium of Indian Law Institute, New Delhi
New Delhi. Commemorating one year of the martyrdom of Afzal Guru, on saturday (the 9th February) Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) held a protest meeting, in the Plenary Auditorium of Indian Law Institute. The meeting that was addressed by various political personalities, academicians, journalists, human rights activists and was attended by hundreds of people from Delhi and other places. The meeting strongly and unanimously condemned the secret execution of  Shaheed Afzal Guru a year back in Tihar Jail as well as the forceful military occupation of Kashmir and other oppressed nationalities of Khalistan and North East.
In a statement issued by CRPP stated that the meeting started with a performance by Inder Salim, in which the entire audience pelted symbolic stones on the enforced ‘collective conscience’ which was evoked to justify Afzal’s murder. This act reinforced the fact that the common masses of India, Kashmir or North East refuse to carry the burden of this ‘collective conscience’ of the oppressive Indian ruling class.
Azaan Javaid, a journalist put forward the importance of united struggle to fight the common enemy of oppression. Professor Jagmohan Singh, eloquently addressed the meeting and expressed his grief of failing Tabassum Guru, for not being able to save her husband or hand over his mortal remains to her. He condemned the cowardice and cruelty of the Indian state. He urged everyone to stand united to fight death penalty and fight the state that perpetuates such injustice on the people who stand for their rights.
Tripta Wahi, a retired professor of history in DU, spoke at length how they fought tooth and nail against the framing of SAR Geelani in the parliament attack case and lamented that Afzal did not get the chance of even being legally represented once. She exposed the hoax of the parliament attack in details and showed how the framing of Afzal was based on sham and fraudulence.
Jatinder Singh from Punjab University also recounted his days of fighting the parliament attack case and how it helped many Indian youths like him to understand the reality of Kashmir and the immense atrocities of the forceful military occupation that is taking place there.
Manoranjan Mohanty, a senior academic from DU also condemned the execution of Afzal and protested against the rampant army atrocities in Kashmir.
 Rafique JAbbar Mullah the general secretary of Social Democratic Party of India talked at lenth how the indian state breeds and shields the communal fascist forces like RSS and its mass murderers while executing people like Afzal Guru and Maqbool Butt.
Harpal Singh Cheema of Dal Khalsa asserted that Afzal and Maqbool are not just martyrs for the Kashmiris but all oppressed people across the Indian sub-continent. Kanwarpal Singh, secretary of Dal Khalsa also reiterated how the valiant struggle of the people of Kashmir inspires all struggles for nationality and livelihood. He said the same atrocities that are perpetrated in Kashmir have been ushered on the people of Khalistan and as neighbouring nations Khalistan and Kashmir should stand by each other in their fights for liberation.
Umar Khalid from Democratic Students’ Union saluted the valiant struggles of Kashmir for national liberation. He asserted how all mainstream political parties have failed the movement of the people in Kashmir but the revolutionary masses of India right since the time of Naxalbari uprising have stood rock solid in extending their support to the movement of Kashmir and other oppressed nationalities.
The meeting was extremely vibrant, punctuated by spirited sloganeerings and poems and songs by youths from Kashmir and India. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Chairperson of Hurriyat, expressed his solidarity to the meeting over phone. The meeting culminated in a protest outside Supreme Court that condemned the atrocious judgment of death penalty that it awarded to Afzal Guru.
CRPP condemned the hooliganism of a handful of sanghi lumpens who tried to vandalise and disrupt a protest march taken out by hundreds of students in Jawaharlal Nehru University, on the night of 8th February condemning the execution of Afzal Guru. They congratulated the spirited students of JNU who successfully held that vibrant march despite such lumpen disruptions.
SAR Geelani (President CRPP) and Rona Wilson (Secretary Public Relations, CRPP) said, “CRPP vouches to stand by the oppressed masses who are languishing in various jails across the Indian sub-continent and will work towards their unconditional release. “
